POS Highway Case Study: The Laurel Group at Baywoods

Founded in 1993, The Laurel Group at Baywoods is located on Long Island, NY and serves the surrounding communities.  They have grown from a simple landscape design and build company, to one that includes maintenance and a complete retail store focused on outdoor living.

With a staff of over 140, and access to the finest subcontractors in the area, The Laurel Group builds its reputation on customer service.  As stated by their controller, Gael Wilford, “We pride ourselves in the client experience and ensuring that each purchase is as unique as the clients themselves. In general, no client would ever see their purchase at another client’s home. The unique experience is important.”

This philosophy has served The Laurel Group exceedingly well.  So much so that instead of relying on advertisements for business growth, 90% of the company’s referrals come from customers so pleased with their overall experience that they recommend the services to others.

However, this growth, especially in a business known for its unique products, has come with challenges.

Challenges Faced As The Business Grew

Having an old register to ring sales and track inventory was extremely limiting to The Laurel Group.  Items could be rung up one at a time, but there was always a question of which category an item should be rung under.  Additionally, creating new items from several other items, such as putting together a succulent arrangement in a ceramic pot, created a nightmare for inventory tracking.

Tracking costs also proved by an extremely daunting task due to the complexity of the products and the distance between the main office and the retail store.  With a growing business, and the need to continue to deliver the best customer experience possible, something had to change.

Switching To A New System

Prior to working as the controller of The Laurel Group, Gael spent time as a consultant for construction companies.  Among her duties were helping these companies implement new software, training them, and setting up new processes and procedures.

She would also teach the staff how to understand and interpret the data they received from the software.  When it came time to search for a new point of sale system at The Laurel Group, Gael was the natural choice to head the project.  After an exhaustive search, Gael and company landed on POS Highway and NCR Counterpoint.

Controlling A Complex Inventory

One feature in Counterpoint, Bill of Materials, has stood out above the rest for The Laurel Group.  This feature has allowed them to bundle items together while maintaining an accurate inventory and costs.

As Gael put it, “Counterpoint has enabled us to move inventory costs around by just building the bill of materialsTHIS is awesome!”  Inventory management, in general, has been easier too, by allowing an up-to-date viewing of inventory at the push of a button.

Providing custom quotes is another powerful feature of Counterpoint. Their team is able to provide quotes and easily convert it into sales orders and provide an invoice to the client within a few clicks.

Of course, all this has benefited the staff as well.  By having the ability to accurately track costs and sales, and by having the system calculate commissions automatically, the staff is paid much quicker.  A happy staff makes for happy customers!

Mobile POS & Why a POS System Is Vital To Any Retail Business

Overall, The Laurel Group is just beginning to scratch the surface of Counterpoint.  They’re constantly exploring new features, and have just recently begun to use CP Mobile.  According to Gael, “The ability to walk around and ring up a customer as they are shopping around the property is awesome! the Sales staff LOVE it!”

And even though they’re learning more and more each day, Counterpoint has become an indispensable part of their business.  There’s no alternative for them anymore, they can’t “just bring the old register back down”.
